The Good Divorce Essay - 2785 Words

January 1st I packed myself my 2 year old daughter and most of our belongings into a new home. I never would have guessed that in approximately two and a half years I would have been getting a divorce from the person who I had been so in love with just a few years earlier. Someone who I had built a home with, someone who I had spent the last 7 years of my life with had a child and raised a step child as my own with. It was one of the most difficult times in my life, but I felt a sense of relief, hope, and optimism. The relationship had never been a healthy one but I was too immature to see it, I had also been brought up to believe that no matter what the problem you stay and try to figure it out. Fay Wedons Weekend a Feminist Analysis Essay - 1190 Words

Fay Weldon’s short story ‘Weekend’ is a strongly feministic and satirical fiction about a weekend of a wife and working-mother in the 70s. The story concerns a well-off English middle-class family, at their country cottage. The central focus is on Martha, and much of the writing represents her stream of consciousness as she struggles to ensure that her family and guests are properly looked after. The misleading title soon proves to be an ironic comment on the weekend that Martha has to endure rather than enjoy, while she also struggles with social expectations of women from her husband and other adults. The first paragraph alone serves to set the tone of the story, while also demonstrating a predominant theme, of gender inequality.†¦show more content†¦An example of this is when Martin describes her car as ‘too wide at the hips’ (Weldon, 1988, P.311). Nevertheless these continuous sexist remarks serve the purpose of creating sympathy for Martha, and malevolence towards Martin, all creating creating a strong feministic alliance. Weldon’s use of third person limited narration predominantly from Martha’s perspective is sometimes unreliable, making it unclear whether Martin is really as unkind to her as she believes. An example of this being, when Martha felt ‘she was in danger, Martin implied, of ruining everyone’s weekend’ (Weldon, 1988, P.323). This choice of narration could be seen as a reflection of Martha’s unstable state of mind, and her tendency to paranoia like her mother. On the other hand it could be seen as having feministic undertones by encouraging women not to put up with controlling behaviour from men under the pretence of the women overreacting. Another technique sometimes used is omniscient intrusive narration creating a strong sense of irony when Weldon states ‘they reckoned themselves fortunate’ (Weldon, 1988, P.309). This also allows for highly sarcastic undertones like when Martha tries convincing herself of what a good husband he is to her by whisking her off ‘for holiday weekends’ (Weldon, 1988, P.313). We are all aware however what a multitude of chores it turns into for her, demonstrated by the

Charlotte Perkins Gilman Feminism free essay sample

Charlotte Perkins Gilman through her writings understood gender roles as socially constructed. She saw these socially constructed gender roles as damaging to women and men both, as they confined men and women to act out their lives in ways that were unfulfilling and limiting to each gender. The oppressive force of patriarchy is described in many different ways throughout her various short stories, but her stories are also imbued with strong messages of hope and transcendence. Conditions for women are obviously much better in the 21st century, but patriarchy still oppresses women in the workforce, with women making 77 cents to men’s dollar (Adams 2013). In â€Å"Three Thanksgivings, â€Å"The Cottagette†, and â€Å"Making a Change†, Perkins-Gilman is describing how limited women’s roles are in the economy. Especially during the time of her writings, women were delegated to the unpaid tasks of â€Å"women’s work. † This included childcare, cooking, cleaning, and tailoring, among others. We will write a custom essay sample on Charlotte Perkins Gilman Feminism or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page Even work that women were paid for, such as music lessons, housekeeping, artwork, and sewing were not considered particularly valuable economic assets and were generally paid much less than other â€Å"male† professions. In each of these stories the female characters are coerced either by the invisible force of patriarchy, or by the people around them, to assume a docile, domestic role as the â€Å"ideal woman†. Inherent to a woman’s role at the time of her work is women’s financial dependency upon men. Men are portrayed as the superior sex, who must be relied upon by their wives/sisters/mothers for financial support, which paradoxically makes them quite burdened unnecessarily. In â€Å"Three Thanksgivings†, Mrs. Morrison, a middle-aged widow, is told by her children and by Mr. Butts (who had paid the mortgage on her house) that she is incapable of taking care of herself and must be supported by either her son, a son-in-law, or Mr.Butts. She ends up collaborating with her maid to turn her house into a parlor for the local women, charging a small membership fee for hundreds of ladies, and is able to pay off her mortgage and earn a living wage (Perkins-Gilman 1997: 17-30). In â€Å"The Cottagette†, Malda tries to suppress her natural talents to conform to society’s expectations of what a man would want from a woman (domesticity) to earn the love of Ford Mathews. In this utopian story, Ford Mathews rejects Malda’s transformation to the domestic cooking, cleaning, â€Å"ideal† woman, for who she really is—creative, artistic, â€Å"rational† â€Å"high-minded† and â€Å"capable of friendship† (Perkins-Gilman 1997: 31-38). Finally, in â€Å"Making a Change† Julia and her mother-in-law decide to find happiness and self-agency by embracing their true passions, music and nannying, and they decide to embrace these passion as professions, which ends up helping the husband/son (Perkins-Gilman 1997: 49-56). All of these stories generally end happily for both woman and man, as each woman becomes self-actualized and gains her agency as a person, so her husband or male counterpart realizes that it is meant to me, and actually benefits, himself. This is how Perkins-Gilman is able to express how she wishes society to change, and much of her stories possess semi-autobiographical instances, especially her most famous work, â€Å"The Yellow Wallpaper. † In her other works, Perkins-Gilman clearly believes that economic self-sufficiency for women is crucial in order for women to be fulfilled. Her most direct expression of this belief is demonstrated throughout â€Å"If I Were a Man. † As she describes Mollie Mathewson’s transformation into her husband Gerald, and the feeling of possessing her own earned money in her pocket: â€Å"†¦All at once, with a deep rushing sense of power and pride, she felt what she had never felt before in all her life—the possession of money, of her own earned money—hers to give or to withhold, not to beg for, tease for, wheedle for—hers† (Perkins-Gilman 1997: 58). Currently, in the United States women and men are both equally expected to be economically self-sufficient, except within particular patriarchal religious sects or other atypical instances. There is some dispute as to the specific reasons why this is so, besides just plain sexist discrimination. Some explanations for the wage disparity are that women typically over-represent lower-paying jobs, such as social work, teaching, nursing, and childcare, women are less likely to ask for pay raises and promotions than their male counterparts, and women are more likely to take time off or have tighter schedules because they have to take care of children and the household. The last instance stated is known as â€Å"the second shift†. Although women are now expected to work just as many hours as men, many women, not nly single mothers, are also primarily responsible for the domestic duties around the home, which, in essence, is like doing a second unpaid shift (Adams 2013). So, in addition to specific jobs considered â€Å"women’s work† being underpaid relative to other professions, women are still disproportionately responsible for all or most of the domestic and childcare duties. In â€Å"Making a Change† Julia opts not to take on the second shift of childcare, because her mother-in-law is much better suited and is so good at it that dozens of other women pay her to care for their children. Perkins clearly believes that childcare should be a paid and respected career option for women. So, we are faced with the question: do women really have the same sense of agency and respect as men if they are paid less for the same work, and work that is primarily done by women is devalued? Although women are expected to work and have the â€Å"privilege† of earning their own wages, some of the gender role expectations that Perkins-Gilman describes could apply to pretty, whimsical, charming, devoted to pretty clothes, a loving wife, devoted mother, and possesses the love of society (Perkins Gilman 57). Most of these characteristics don’t sound particularly outdated, especially â€Å"loving wife†, â€Å"devoted mother†, â€Å"pretty†, and â€Å"charming†. I can imagine Charlotte Perkins-Gilman writing a fictional story from the perspective of one of today’s beauty pageant contestants or commenting on the mundane life of a modern soccer mom. Thankfully, women today are able to write autobiographies, news stories, and exposes about issues like these in today’s world. Even though gender roles are still very much a part of modern society, it is gradually getting better. In order for major institutional policy changes to me made, more women need to be positions of political leadership. As more and more women become educated and empowered, I’m sure the wage gap will continue to decrease, and perhaps our society’s values will be shifted in a direction that pays traditional â€Å"women’s work† jobs more, so that it really is a level playing field. Organizational Behavior

Introduction Organizational behavior control is important in fostering a proactive workforce. Reflectively, the process consists of a structured human resource management system that incorporates motivation, training, organized feedback system, and evaluation procedure. Among the key issues identified by these authors as positive influencers of organization behavior include motivation, empowerment, and training (Liu, Combs, Ketchen, Ireland 2007). Refle ctively, these factors should be internalized in the human resource management system to foster proactive attitude among the staff (Wayne Liden 1995). Among the motivation enhancing practices identified by these authors include incentives, promotions, rewards, and recognition. However, the authors opine that effectives of these components depend on vertical, horizontal, and work alignments. Carson, in the article â€Å"Saying it like it isn’t: The pros and cons of 360-degree feedback†, asserts that feedback system management system may influence positive or negative perception among employees. In encoding and decoding information, it is critical to balance the wanted and unwanted grapevine (Wimbush 2006). Thus, in reviewing performance based on feedback received, the author is categorical in advising the human resource management team to handle the voluntary information with care to boost trust and confidentiality which form the pinnacle of organizational behavior. Th erefore, it is critical to balance the feedback with the goals of such an organization as a remedy towards inclusiveness and active participation which translates into desirable performance. Through training of then evaluation and performance reviewers, it is possible to establish a clear line between informal and formal office grapevines which foster a unique culture among employees. Reflectively, a complete 360 degree feedback process should operate on boosting morale and maintaining desirable confidence levels (Carson 2006). The process should be inclusive of structured evaluation and progress reporting tools.Advertising Looking for essay on business economics? Let's see if we can help you! Get your first paper with 15% OFF Learn More The article â€Å"Employee Motivation: A Powerful New Model† by Nohria, Groyberg, and Lee dwells on factors that foster proactive employee attitude through motivational channels. Organizational behavior should be aligned within four models identified by these authors. These models are the motivation to acquire, bond, comprehend, and defend (Vitale Mavrinac 1995). Therefore, a proactive behavior control system should function within a structured reward system. When the system functions within accepted parameters, employees will eventually develop a self consciousness to deliver quality services and defend the organization as part of a family unit (Nohria, Groysberg, Lee 2008). Thus, the human resource management team should strive to maintain professionalism and avoid unfairness to make the process function optimally. The article, â€Å"Performance and rewards: cleaning out the stables† by Hendry, Woodward, Bradley, and Perkin introduces the aspect of planning to demystify poor performance as part of employee redundancy. Reflectively, proper use of competency review system is directly proportional to employee performance (Hendry, Woodward Bradley 2009). Therefore, organizational effectiveness sho uld be the cornerstone for modeling acceptable behavior between the management and staff (Zornitsky1995). However, the policies adopted should be aligned to the basic building blocks of performance and scope of the organization. These policies should incorporate employee-employer relationship model, performance review, and organizational social culture. Conclusion Conclusively, organizational behavior is influenced by several factors such as motivation, promotion, and structured feedback system. However, policies aimed at balancing performance and behavior should be aligned to the goals of an organization. Jack London Essays (1100 words) - Jack London, Charmian London

Jack London One is led to believe that if a person is an author, then that person would have the best education that is available to them. However, this is not the case for Jack London. He dropped out of school at the age of fourteen and explored San Francisco, stole oysters, worked for the government, went to Japan, and traveled around the United States by hitching rides on freight trains. This is just a list of the few things he did during the five-year period while he did not attend school. He then returned and finished high school at the age of nineteen to continue onto the University of California at Berkeley, only to quit after one semester. Yet, he is described by Howard Lacchtman, as a ?born teller of tales? (Lundberg 1). Flora Wellman gave birth to Jack London on January 12, 1876 in San Francisco, California. Flora Wellman was an unmarried woman who came from a very wealthy background. Jack London's father, an astrologer who was very nomadic, deserted him and his mother when Jack London was born. Jack London received his last name from his stepfather who married his mother late in the year of 1876. John London, Flora Wellman, and Jack London moved to Oakland, California in 1886 where Jack London spent his childhood years. It is said that London was a frequent visitor of the Oakland Public Library and loved to read at an early age. Yet, because of the hard times, he always helped support his family by ?delivering newspapers, sweeping saloon floors, setting up pins in a bowling alley and working at other jobs? (Port of Oakland). At the age of fourteen, Jack London decided to quit school to ?escape poverty and gain adventure? (Britannica.com Inc.). He did a number of things in the five-year period while he escaped from school. He pirated for oysters on the San Francisco Bay, worked to capture poachers on fish patrols, and sailed all around the Pacific Ocean on a sailing ship. He also ?hoboed around the country? (Dr. Stasz) and worked many miscellaneous, strenuous and ruthless jobs. At the age of nineteen, he returned to school to discover his passion in life, reading. When London returned to high school at the age of nineteen, he became well acquainted with the idea of socialism through the many books he read. At the age of twenty he became a student at the University of California at Berkeley, but he quit after one semester. London was often known as the ?Boy Socialist of Oakland for his street corner oratory? (Stasz). He ran many times for the political title of mayor as a socialist, but to his disappointment, he was never elected. He later quit the Socialist party because because of its ?lack of fire and fight? and its loss of ?emphasis on the class struggle? (Port of Oakland). Because he was never elected, he chose to become a writer to escape poverty and the horrific working conditions of factories, mines and hard labor. So London tried to support himself by writing, all without success, and eventually joined the gold rush to the Klondike in 1897. He then returned from the Klondike gold rush in 1898 to attempt writing once again. He sold his story, To the Man on Trail to the Overland Monthly of San Francisco for five dollars. Since his publication in the Overland Monthly, he became a dedicated and disciplined writer. He then completed his first book in 1900, The Son of the Wolf, which is a collection of his tales from Klondike, Alaska. In the same year as his first book release, London married Elizabeth Maddern and they settled in Oakland, California. After the birth of his first daughter Joan in 1901 he ran for the Oakland mayor as a Socialist candidate, but did not win. His second daughter Bess was born in 1902. A short while after Bess was born, London and his family moved to Piedmont Hills where he met and became good friends with George Sterling. However, this was not his last move and he did not live happily ever after. In 1905, he divorced his wife Elizabeth London and the next day he married Charmian Kittredge.

There are numerous personnel benefits that managers can extend to their workers to motivate and retain them in the organization. One of the strategies an organization can use to retain employees is by exhibiting gratitude through rewards and benefits (Niles, 2012). Employers have an obligation to provide health cover plans, incorporating vision and dental plans, sick leave and retirement plans and holidays to their workers to motivate them and earn their trust, which often translates to low employee turnover. The retention of employees is a beneficial strategy and less costly exercise in the long-run lieu recruiting new employees.Additionally, it is imperative for the HR management to offer rewards such as competitive salaries, earnings sharing, extra programs and paid time-off. Retirement and h ealth benefits also enable the employee to feel secure and certain about their future. Moreover, holiday breaks and vacations allow the employees to manage their work-related stress, and provide an opportunity for rejuvenation. Employers have a platform to avail other benefits such as education refunds and child or old-age care services. Singer and Goodrich (2006) argue that the education refund packages convey a vital message to the employees that the firm highly regards them.An organization can also roll out mentoring programs in the firm. A mentoring program with a goal-oriented feedback arrangement provides a structured system for building strong relations within a company and is a concrete foundation for human resources retention (Devereux, & Hart, 2006). Further, mentoring programs in an entity match a worker that is more experienced in a field with a less experienced one in a related field. Pairing of employees develops definite competencies, presents performance feedback and devises a customized career development plan for the workers. In addition, the employers can provide recommendations and recruit from within (Devereux, & Hart, 2006). Hiring workers from within the company decreases employee turnover since employees are already familiar with the organization’s operations and policies.ReferencesDevereux, P. J., & Hart, R. A., 2006. Germany's Holocaust Memorial - Assignment Example Eisenman designed it in a way that each stone slab is unique, positioned on uneven ground at varying heights. Some are taller than an average person while some are just as high as the ankles. Visitors are encouraged to wander through the paths and they can enter the monument on all four sides. Eisenman designed the monument to create a sense of instability, and the maze of stones tends to disorient some visitors. However, the designer of the monument hoped that the memorial will become a natural part of the city, and offer a respite for its citizens after a busy day. At the base of the monument is a subterranean Information Center, where visitors can find more information about the monument’s design and construction. It also features stories of several individuals and families who faced persecution of the Nazis during the war. The Information Center is open day and night. The monument serves as a silent reminder of a past that most people would want to forget. May it also serv e as a symbol of hope for the future generations. May each stone slab remind us all that no one has the right to take another man’s life for personal ambitions. May we all learn from our history, so that the acts of infamy committed by such unlawful men will never happen again.

A Picture in the 1800s Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words

A Picture in the 1800s - Essay Example The image of the photo is taken with the medium of daguerreotype, which presented photos that are clear in the eyes of the viewers. The factors of the use of daguerreotype medium of presentation of the photo made it to have well balanced lighting so that it is not exaggerated with a lot of silver halides as seen in the calotype photos. This has made the image to look very unique and admirable when a person views it. Due to the daguerreotype medium of presentation, the photographer has been able to balance the coloration so that he can imply the difference in color of the clothes of the man in the photo and represent the direction of the source of light. The photo represent the time in which it was created because of the fact that it has many characteristics of the pictures of the time. These characteristic are the color, the environment and its decoration as well as the shape of the photo which are unique for it. These aspects of the photo make it to identify with the kind of photos that were represented in the times of its making because it was a conforming to almost all of them.

The History Of Manufactured Bicycles Economics Essay

The History Of Manufactured Bicycles Economics Essay Brompton Bicycle is a  bicycle  manufacturer based in  Brentford,  London, in the  United Kingdom and largest volume bicycle manufacturer in Britain by Andrew Ritchie in 1976. Models are named using a code containing two letters either side of a number to describe the handle bar type, number of gears and factory attached fixtures. An optional suffix is appended to show the inclusion of titanium upgrades. In Britain the clubs membership is changing, with 35-40% of Brompton customers now women. The average riders age has also dropped below 40. Its getting profit in uk . Brompton Bicycle is a  British  company that specialises in  folding bicycles, commonly known as Bromptons. Bromptons are popular among  bicycle commuters, especially in the UK, the  Netherlands, and  Japan. Fast and compact folding is seen as the Bromptons key competitive advantage. The Brompton design has remained fundamentally unchanged over three decades, although it has been steadily refined. The Brompton was conceived as a product that increases peoples  independence  and  freedom,  means peple can use this cycle wherever they can use. Approximately 22,000 bicycles are produced by the company each year of which 70 percent are exported to asia and Europe. The compact dimensions of most folding bikes allow easy transport in public transport where travelling with a normal bike can be difficult or forbidden. We can this cycle in different style handlebar like c type handlebar, m type handlebar, s type handlebar and p type handlebar. -http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brompton_Bicycle PEST ANALYSIS OF BROMPTON BICYCLE: Political factor: The number of people cycling on Londons major roads has nearly doubled since 2000 and Transport for London (TfL) is targeting a 5% mode share for cycling by 2025. South West Trains, part of Stagecoach Group, has joined forces with Brompton Bicycle in a bid to encourage passengers to cycle as part of a fully integrated low carbon journey combining bike and train. Every one like this bikes because it is efficient to ride but can be quickly folded into a package smaller than an average suitcase, so people can take wherever they like. Economic factor: Though exports account for around 75 per cent of its output, it continues to manufacture all of its   bikes in the UK. Its getting profit here. Social factor: Brompton bike got a award, Mr Ritchie, who was awarded the prize that recognizes a lifetime contribution to design, has spent 21 years perfecting the Brompton, which is manufactured in Britain and sells around the world. At a reception celebrating 50 years of British design genius at Buckingham Palace. Technological factor: When transporting a Brompton Bicycle, for instance by Plane, Train, Car or boat it would be beneficial to have a protective case-like product that would protect from typical transit damage and be used to store the bike in any of its likely environments. There is a need for such a protective case to also double as a fully functional bike trailer that will attach to the rear of the bike and be used to transport light to moderate loads. -http://www.stagecoachgroup.com SWOT ANALYSIS OF BROMPTON BICYCLE: strength: Brompton bicycle is Generally  travel free  and without booking restrictions on rail, bus, underground, ferry or air services. Its that freedom to travel anywhere with your bike that gives folding bikes a magic quality. A folding bike can open up entirely new ways of travelling. Its have many colour with extra tall frame to fit tall riders. From 1976, Brompton was in business, although growth was infuriatingly slow. Today, the Brompton Bicycle Ltd turns out 100 precision-crafted bikes a day from its cosy, familial factory in Kew. It sells them in 27 international markets, as well as servicing the needs of the 200,000 passionately dedicated Brompton users already on the road. Bromptons have been ridden from  London  to  Cape Town  and around the  South Pole, but theyre at their most perfectly useful in an urban environment. Brompton is the last major manufacturer making bikes in London a true, two-wheeled, capital success story. It has succeeded, according to managing director Will Butler-Adams, by focusing on its roots. Brompton remains in London because the business is the staff and the staff are here. They make something fashionable. People like the Brompton because its fun and it fits into their lives. In London, the bike is moving from being an issue of personal choice to being a corporate and political city solution. On the corporate side, Brompton already leases a fleet of bikes to South West Trains at Waterloo, and Mr Butler-Adams has plans to provide package deals including bikes, training, storage and insurance to other companies. Bromptons nearby neighbour in west London. The British Design Council, which annually awards the prize for the respective designers lifetime achievement, argued that the foldable Brompton bike manufactured by the engineer in the UK and sold throughout the world won for its lightness, portability, smoothness of ride, and the sense of freedom it bestows. Brompton Bicycle should produce 25,000 bikes this year, achieving sales of  £7m-  £8m, and Ritchie expects it to grow 25% a year under the leadership of managing director Butler-Adams. Exports to markets such as the Netherlands, America, Germany, Japan and Scandinavia account for about 60% of its sales. weakness : All seat pillars are available in both steel and aluminium versions. With the standard seat pillar, the Brompton and Brooks saddles can be up to 995mm from the ground. If your inside leg is more than 33/84cm, you will almost certainly need either of the longer seat pillars; the telescopic pillar is suitable for an inside leg of more than 35/89cm, or for a taller rider wishing to minimise the height of the folded bike. So for the shorter people it can be difficult for ride. Its not adjustable as other bigger cycle. The merits and drawbacks of small and large wheels alike can be argued into the late hours. Opportunities: The Brompton is the only bike in the world to combine such ready portability with a first-class ride, and it creates countless new opportunities for using a bicycle. Malcolm Shepherd, Chief Executive of Sustrans said: Cycling England has  been a crucial conduit for funding which has touched the lives of millions of people by making it possible for people to cycle for everyday journeys. And Brompton bikes are suitable for the every journey. Here are so many bike company competitor for the Brompton bikes. Alldays Onions, Bickerton- folding bikes. Boardman bikes, british eagle, claud bulter, dawes, etc.. bicycles are here. Like Brompton bickerton is also a folding cycle. It can be a main competitor. The  Bickerton, also called the  Bickerton Portable, was a portable, aluminium  folding bicycle  designed by Harry Bickerton and manufactured in the UK between 1971 and 1991. The bicycle was entirely made of aluminium profiles. Its riding properties were poor, partly as the aluminium parts could never be properly locked in place. In its weight and folded package size it broke new ground  and it is cited by  Andrew Ritchie  as one of his inspirations in creating the highly successful  Brompton bicycle. So the Brompton is better than any cycle thats why70% Brompton bike are exporting to asia and Europe. Threats: The iconic UK folding bike maker Brompton is a curious company.   Though exports account for around 75 per cent of its output, it continues to manufacture all of its   bikes in the UK. Brompton bicycles many parts are custom made which may bring delays and extra costs for repairs from other than authorized dealers. The bike may be less suited to long rides as most models have restricted gears. Brompton manufacture the basic frame in one size only. Riders requiring a bottom bracket to saddle top height of more than 715mm/28 can select an extended seat post to give a maximum saddle height of 775mm/30.5 . There is also a telescopic seat post option which gives greater height still and does not compromise the size of the folded package, although it adds substantial weight. -http://www.bikesandtrailers.com/folding-bikes/brompton.html Before doing any business first we have to do pest analysis in that country which is following PEST ANALYSIS OF BANGLADESH: Political environment Bangladesh is a densely populated and poor nation in South Asia. Nurse Shortage in America Essay -- Nursing

Nurse Shortage In America There is a shortage of all health care professions throughout the United States. One shortage in particular that society should be very concerned about is the shortage of Registered Nurses. Registered Nurses make up the single largest healthcare profession in the United States. A registered nurse is a vital healthcare professional that has earned a two or four year degree and has the upper-most responsibility in providing direct patient care and staff management in a hospital or other treatment facilities (Registered Nurse (RN) Degree and Career Overview., 2009). This shortage issue is imperative because RN's affect everyone sometime in their lifetime. Nurses serve groups, families and individuals to foster health and prevent disease. The nursing shortage is divided into four different categories. The four categories are as follows; "willing nurse" shortage, funding or perceived funding shortage, shortage of understanding that nurses are needed to deliver care, and nurse education and empowerment shortages (What is the nursing shortage and why does it exist?., 18 October, 2007). To be able to repair this major problem, all four segments of shortages need to be addressed. The first nursing shortage, A "willing nurse" shortage, is the simple fact of not enough supply to fill the demand of nursing positions. This shortage occurs either because there are simply not enough nurses to fill the open positions, or because experienced nurses are opting out of nursing and the willingness to provide care due to the current occupational environment. In 2010, with Lotus & Bamboo soap bar was introduced by Mary Kay in India, May Kay was approved a customized product for a specific country or region market for the first time. Moreover, the branded and packaged Indian care category of Mary Kay was growing up and expanding its product to attract more potential customers. Mary Kay brand has been developing massive products in India until 2010 with lower price compared with past several years. By late 2010, there were more independent beauty consultants in more regions in India, and most of the businesses were distributed in northern, western and northeastern area of India. Simultaneously, in the late 2010, Mary Kay also meets competition from other representative of hair care products. Market research has shown that the growth potential of around 50% for the coming 5 years between 2010 and 2014. 2. How would you assess the â€Å"fit† of a hair care product line with Mary Kay’s offering in India? The acceptance of hair care products line is growing with changes of hair care habit of customers in India. Personally, the â€Å"fit† project of hair care product line with Mary Kay’s offering in India was pretty successful and in time. Based on the unique hair care habit among Indians, it might be a slow process to introduce the products into a new Asian market for Mary Kay. After all, hair cares like shampoo and conditioner are not as easily as soap bars to be accepted in India, which means changing hair care lifestyle for most people there. Therefore, launching hair care products in 2012 is the very time for India. Additionally, independent beauty consultants are the positive factor to motivate to sell products in India. Furthermore, low price promotion strategy also worked for selling hair care in India, according to the data in the case, nearly 87 percent of hair care products were sold at mass-market prices, however, only 13 percent of the products were sold at  prestige or premium prices. 3.What is the market potential for a hair care marketed by Mary Kay India? According to the research, the Indian upper and consuming classes were growing and were expected to total over 500 million individual, which might be reckoned as potential consumers of hair care products. It seems that Mary Kay India is targeted to young, working people who are pursuing good look with an average age of 26, especially women group. Given to the increasing population in India, in the coming years, the number of young generation will also be expected to grow up. Meanwhile, the expected young generation will grow up under impact of new body care lifestyle in India, (who are accustomed to using shampoo and conditioner instead of oil, washing hair frequently, caring about the appearance),thus, it could be forecasted that the market of hair care products would be extended in the near future. 4.At what dollar sales volumes will the Mary Kay India hair care line be profitable? Give to the estimated scale of production of a total of 600,000 units of the 6-milliliter sachets, total cost of production and distribution would probably be $600,000. Then, the highest estimated total cost of production and delivery for the 100 milliliter bottles would be $1,410,000, but the lowest would sum up to $1,110,000. Moreover, when take advertising, promotion, and sales into consideration, the costs would probably come to $705,000, while the highest total amount of sales could be even more than $2,715,000. 5. Should Mary Kay introduce a hair care line in India? Why or Why not? As far as I am concerned, Mary Kay should introduce a hair care line in India. On the basis of the data above, the highest total amount of sales could come to $2,715,000 for Mary Kay, which means huge profit in India market. What is more, as the transformation of lifestyle among young Indians, the number of people who tend to use hair care products could rise up in the coming decades. Once hair care products are accepted by Indian people, it means more opportunities and profit growth point for Mary Kay brand. For instance, Mary Kay company could develop more hair care products with specific functions to satisfy the increasingly demand among people. Lastly, another  advantage to introduce Mary Kay to India is that labor price in India is pretty low, which illustrates that the cost to produce hair care products in India could be controlled easily. In general, introducing hair care products to India is a wise action for Mary Kay company.

Allocation Time Management †Economics Term Paper

Allocation Time Management – Economics Term Paper Free Online Research Papers Allocation Time Management Economics Term Paper One of the basic methods used in economics is the allocation time management and money. There are two different types of financial goals: Near Term financial goals and Long-Term financial goals. Near term financial goals are goals that can be achieved within five years or less. Long-Term financial goals are goals that can be achieved in within five-ten years. I have many near-term financial goals that can be achieved within five years. These goals include: becoming debt free, earn a four year degree, have more spend able cash, obtain my own health and life insurance, establish a savings account, and have six-nine months emergency cash My next near-term financial goal will be an investment in human capital. I plan to earn a four-year degree from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University. During my two-year stay at Daytona Beach Community College, I have taken out approximately $5,000 in student loans. I have been accepted to Embry-Riddle, which I plan to attend next year. The next three years at Embry-Riddle will cost approximately $84,000, which equals to $28,000 a year for tuition. The Air Force Reserve Officer Training Corp (ROTC) will pay for this. In turn I will serve six years as a second lieutenant in the United States Air Force. The Air Force Reserve Officer training Corps has many time-oriented problems. ROTC takes up about twenty hours out of my academic schedule a week. I have two four-hour classes that I have to attend on Mondays and Wednesdays. Then on every Wednesday and Friday morning I have to get up at 4:00am and jog 3.5 miles then I have to do an hours worth of static physical training. ROTC helps me keep and maintain my health goals. I had always wanted to stay in shape, and ROTC disciplines me to work out at minimum 3 days a week. The next near-term financial goal I plan to pursue will help me acquire a savings account with six-nine months emergency cash. After all of my bills are paid off I will have over $150.00 left over a month to save. I plan to open a savings account and invest $75.00 a month into it until I establish six- nine month’s worth of emergency cash. This account will be at Wachovia, I started this account shortly after I started my economics course at DBCC. I will have to repeat the saving trend for two years, and deposit approximately $1,800. I figured that with this saving account I would have a fall back security if I ever got into real financial trouble. The last near-term financial goals will be paying off my car. I bought a 2001 Mustang Convertible when I turned 18 years old. When I bought it I put $8,000 down as a down payment. This lowered my payments to $191.47 a month. This February in 2004 I will have paid on this car for one year. Some near-term financial goals could be to pay extra car payments to the principle, or refinance the car if my car payment has the highest interest rates of all my bills. Once I have established becoming debt free, obtaining my own insurance policy, and establishing a savings account I will then pay extra payments to pay the car off. Once the car is paid off I will continue to take care of it and basically drive it until it falls apart. Then I will invest in a more gas efficient vehicle to help me save money in the future. I have done some research and I have found that once I commission full time in the Air Force I can then draw health, dental, and life insurance through TRICARE. In the mean time and until 2006 I will continue to stay on my fathers policy through United Space Alliance who in turn sets up my insurance through Cigna Health Care. I have many long-term goal financial goals. These goals include: owning a house, paying off student loans, buying a car, establishing a Roth IRA for retirement, investing in stocks, mutual funds etc, and retirement. Once I succeed and accomplish my near-term financial goals, I will be in good shape to begin working to my long-term financial goals. The first of my long-term financial goals would be to own a house. During the first couple years in the Air Force, I plan to live in the barracks. While I live in the barracks I plan to save money for a down payment on a house. I have changed my career in the Air Force, originally I wanted to be an intelligence officer, but now I plan to join the joint NATO fighter task force in 2007. If I succeed and obtain a flight spot I will be station in Texas for a year and then I will be send out to the European Air forces in Germany. Once I get stationed in Germany, which is where the task force is located, the Air Force will give me a $1,500 a month check for a housing allowance. I figured that $1,500 would go a long way in Europe especially if I lived and shopped on base. A usual tour Ramstein can last from four to eight years. I plan on buying a house and living in it until I get transferred to another base. My next long-term financial goal will be to own a Mustang Saleen. My commanding officer that is a Major was stationed at Ramstein. She told me that if I got stationed there I could buy a car at the base dealership for a lot less then I could buy the same car stateside. All my life I have always wanted a car that will go up in value as it matures. I will consider this car a financial investment. I plan to take care of it and keep it running and looking nice. After so many years I will either sell it or keep it in the family, so one day it will be worth more than I paid for it. Throughout my adult hood I will be faced with many bills. These bills will include: a mortgage, car payment, and utilities, etc. But, there is one bill I will not pay off right away, this bill is my student loan bill. Since I have only taken out $5,000 in student loans my bill should be small. I can deduct the interest I was charged from my loans on my yearly income taxes. I can do this as long my income stays below certain limits. My next long-term financial goal will be establishing a Roth IRA. A Roth IRA is an investment account that does not deduct taxes from your earnings. IRA stands for an Individual Retirement Act. I have not taken into consideration when and where I will start the IRA at but i am sure it will be with an agency where I have prior accounts with. In the future I plan to have one for myself my wife and quite possibly my kids. I plan to start this IRA account when I am twenty-two or twenty four years of age. I will invest $2,000 $3,000 max a year for approximately eight years. As long as the rates stay at 10% I will have over a million dollars by the age of sixty-five. After I establish a Roth IRA, I will to focus on retirement. If I serve twenty years in the Air Force, I will retire with a full military pension. I will also have TRICARE health, dental, and life insurance for life. During some point in my military career, I will open up a 401K account and begin investing in mutual funds. I plan to open a 401 K after I retire and start a career at another company. The investment group I plan to use is Vanguard; they will invest my 401K in the S P Index 500. I believe with a Roth IRA, military pension, and a 401K I will be better off in the future and ready for retirement. Once I serve twenty years in the Air Force I can retire. I would like to retire as a four-star General, but if I retire as a Colonel I can collect about $30,000 a year. I researched the military officer pay scale and I have determined what a four-star General and what a Colonel would make after twenty years of service. A General would make $7779.00 a month, and a Colonel would $4736.10 a month. If I commission at the age of twenty two I can retire at the age of forty-two. Then I can get a job with Homeland Security or NASA and bring in a second income and quite possible collect a pension or start a 401K. Sticking to these goals will not be easy. I believe that as long as I succeed in accomplishing the following long-term and near-term financial goals I will be in good financial shape in the future. I will be able to live a life without the fear of debt, and live a life with the hope of retirement. How did the Christian Church contribute to the development o essays

How did the Christian Church contribute to the development o essays Today, Spain is one of the most influential countries in Europe. It is a country that is portrayed as being strong, sophisticated and stable. However, Spain's past and the route in which the country has taken to be where it is now were shaped hugely in the medieval ages. During the medieval ages Iberians experienced great change in with the transformation of Iberia from that of an Islamic culture to one based upon Christianity. Iberian culture fluctuated greatly during the medieval ages and the contrasting lifestyles of the Christians and the Moors led to an interesting mix in terms of society. Most aspects of society changed during this period, though the period in which the moors governed the area has also left some reminders of the time which are still in evidence nowadays. One of the main aspects of society that the Christian Church decided to improve was the education system. The Christian Church observed that the present education system was ineffective largely due to the neglecting of that system by the Moors during Iberia's uncultured past. Initially, much attention was given to the problems of education. The improvements which took place included the creation of schools in the most highly populated Christian areas. Most of these improvements to the education system took place during the 13th century. Municipal schools, cathedral schools and Universities were built. Through this avenue the change to Christianity was strengthened by the introduction of lecturers from Italy and France; both Christian nations. There were also improvements in the field of health care again occurring in the 13th century. The hospital movement, in which many health facilities were created, was in full flow during this century. As a result, the region of Castille benefited by the establishment of many hospitals and leprosarium. Nine hospitals and hospices were erected in Barcelona (including one which cared for abandoned children) and eleven ho ...

Define the appropriate methods of communication and discuss the Essay

Define the appropriate methods of communication and discuss the challenges experienced with surgical patients - Essay Example 2). Electronic patient-controlled alert devices notify practitioners of meaningful responses from surgical patients during surgical procedures. They detect meaningful responses from patients and alert practitioners about them. Hand holding by nurses is intended to make patients comfortable in order to boost confidence, deal with pain, and reassure the patient about their own safety. Communication between patients and practitioners should be effective so that suregeons can improve surgical outcomes, promote healing, and build trust (Griffen 2007, p. 11). Some challenges experienced with surgical patients include delivering bad news, discussing informed consent, participating in shared decision making, and patient education. These challenges occur when practitioners do not have proper communication skills, or when they ignore basic communication tenets. These challenges may occur as a result of the condition of patients. They may be addressed by practitioner by sitting down when talking to patients, understanding the patient as individuals, showing respect and empathy, creating partnership, listening attentively, calming fears, eliciting concerns, being honest, educating patients on their treatment options, and involving patients (Silverman, Kurtz & Draper 1998, p.

Biofuel Synthesis Project Proposals Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words

Biofuel Synthesis Project Proposals - Essay Example As a means of ensuring objective adoption of green energy like biodiesel, education stakeholders have decided to integrate concepts of biofuel in college and university curriculum (Tuohy and Saddler 28). Currently, concepts of biofuel in learning institutions are delivered to students through both theoretical and practical lessons. This means that chemistry students will not only learn about the theoretical construct of biofuel production, but they will also conduct small scale practical projects within a laboratory setting. Therefore, this proposal extrapolates on the necessary aspects of chemical synthesis meant to facilitate actual production of biodiesel within a learning environment. The main objective of this project is to simulate a real production process used in synthesis of market biodiesel. The entire experiment will operate within the boundaries placed by material and equipment constrains. This means that procedures used may fail to totally emulate typical steps employed in commercial production of biodiesel. However, one goal of the project is to synthesize small quantity of a biodiesel from available raw materials, and test whether the final product possesses required characteristics of biodiesel. This experiment will not only enable students to apply theoretical knowledge that they have acquired in class, but will also transform theoretical fantasies and create a sense of realistic accomplishment in chemistry. Apart from establishing a discrete link between theoretical and practical concepts, this experiment also aims at promoting individual participation in group work. In addition, strict adherence to all synthesis steps helps students in learning abo ut procedural execution of laboratory processes. In order to optimize the synthesis process and ensure production of quality biodiesel, this experiment will be conducted in a strategic and procedural manner. The first strategy involves establishing harmony between materials and equipment available

Engineering Ethics Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 250 words - 1

Engineering Ethics - Essay Example Today, France generates about 70% of its electricity with an array of nuclear plants that come in only three sizes: small, medium, and large. In fact, their plants make so much electricity that France is the largest net exporter of electric power in the world. And modular, standardized construction practices are a large part of why the French nuclear effort has been such a success† (Kayde, 2011). Modular practices make it harder to produce dual-use materials or turn waste into weaponry. France's engineers created a moral result through engineering. Is smart nuclear power ethical? Some people think it isn't, no matter how smart. But it seems to really stretch believability that nuclear power is always by definition a bad thing. Is it really worse than coal? Is it so much worse that there is never a reason to use it over coal? Engineers working on smarter nuclear solutions is moral even when many activists are opposed to nuclear power as a matter of course. But there is another p oint to make. Morality must always be adjudicated based not just on consequences but on the innate character of the acts and the virtues of the person involved. One problem with consequentialist, utilitarian perspectives is that they tend to allow people to justify flawed solution A over B without ever trying to think of good solution C, something deontological ethics prevents by favoring the status quo.

Racism and Anti-Semitism in America Essay Example for Free

Racism and Anti-Semitism in America Essay Stereotyping reflects expectations and belief about the characteristics of members of groups perceived as different from one’s response and discrimination refers to emotion (www.usnews.com). We all encounter some form of prejudice or stereotype in our life. What types are they? Would you see the lasting affects it has on someone you yourself had discriminated against? Would you recognize the effects it had on you? This author will introduce you to three different stereotypes, fallacious, hasty generalization, and false dichotomy. I will explain the damages being stereotyped does to a person and the lasting effects it has. Aggression, overeating, inability to focus, and difficulty making rational decisions, all are negative effects experienced by those subjected to prejudice, according to University of Toronto Study (Michael Inzticht, 2012). â€Å"Past studies have shown that people perform in situations where they feel they are being stereotyped,† said professor Michael Inzticht of psychology who led the study, published in the month’s edition of the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology. What we wanted to do was look at what happens afterwards. Are there any lingering effects of prejudice? Does being stereotyped have an impact beyond the moment when stereotyping happens (www.usnews,com)? A person that stereotypes based on negative feelings is a person that is indifferent to accepting cultural diversity and situations that they find dissonance with because that are either entrenched with prejudice from a psycho social paradigm, or make the conscientious choice to be prejudice because of their inferential way of thinking. In Nazi Germany people were imprisoned and even killed for trying to fight anti-Semitism. In America we are free to fight it, but too many of us choose to ignore this hate that dare not speak its name. Anti-Semitism is real, it is murderous and it is very much with us today (www.the-american-interest.com). Anti-Semitism involves beliefs that Jews are more clannish that other people and act in concert to support a specific Jewish agenda. Jews deploy ex traordinary wealth with almost superhuman cunning in support of the Jewish agenda. As a religious and national minority, Jews cannot flourish without attacking the traditional values of their host society. In every country Jews seek to weaken national culture, religion, values, and cohesion. Jews are not a national group or a people in the way that others are; they do not have the same rights to establish a nation state that other people do. Where Jewish interest is concerned, the appearance of open debate in our society and many others is carefully constructed illusion. In reality, Jews work together to block open debate on issues they care about and those who resist the Jewish agenda are marginalized in public discussion. These ideas are the five pillars of anti-Semitism; you don’t have to believe them all- any one will do. Being an anti-Semite does not necessarily make you a Nazi. You are an anti-Semite. That doesn’t make you a Nazi; Hitler added a sixth pillar of anti-Semitism that the only way to successfully oppose the Jewish agenda was to kill all the Jews. This idea have become so widely accepted that they are seldom questioned or examined; when that happens a whole society is poisoned and distorted. Stereotyping is one of the biggest issues in social psychology but relatively little is known about how and why stereotypes form. Conventional approaches to stereotyping assumes that stereotypes are based on erroneous and distorted processes, but others feel that they form in order to explain aspects of social groups and in particular to explain relationships between groups. In particular stereotypes have often been seen as rigid and distorted mental structure that lead people to make serious errors (McGarty et al, 2010). From a social functional point of view race is a social construction, on the one hand it has been a legitimating ideological tool to suppress and exploit specific social groups and to deny them access to material and cultural resources, work, welfare services, housing, political rights, etc. On the other hand, these affected groups have adopted the idea of race. They have turned the concept around and used it to construct an alternative positive self-identity; they have also used it as a basic for political resistance (Miles, 1993:28) and to fight for more antonomy, independence, and participation. There are several forms of stereotyping and prejudice, but I will give you examples of only three. I will explain the stereotype and elaborate on the meanings they present. Fallacious argument is the first stereotype that I will be discussing. A fallacious argument simply means false or not correct, but is usually used to describe someone being deceptively false. Fallacy is a misconception of a false belief. If someone is being fallacious they are trying to get you to fall for a fallacy (www.vocabulary-vocabulary.com). All African American men who drive big cars are drug dealers. Or if a group of African American youth or men stand around in a group they are gang bangers. This is a fallacious belief. African American men have driven large cars as long as I can remember. My uncle all my life has driven nothing but Lincoln Continentals. He is now a retired engineer from the railroad having driven trains for more than thirty years. I have friends that are firemen, teachers, and family men that wound not purchase a car if sit was not as it’s called a â€Å"Big Body.† Next, people stand around and talk, and socialize in crowds all the time, this does not mean they are gang bangers. I have made my sons stop standing around with their friends by a fence in the neighborhood because I did not want them harassed by the police if they should pass by and see them standing there. People assume the worst of people out of fear and or ignorance on their part. The next stereotype that I will discuss is one that I personally experienced. â€Å"Since you are so tall I know you can play basketball.† Being a woman of tall statue everyone assumes that I play basketball. All through Jr. High and High School my physical education teachers tried to get me to play ball. The head coach for the girls’ basketball team even tried to get me to leave band which I loved and play ball for her. I forever heard, â€Å"as tall as you are I know you can play.† I hated basketball, I still do. I never cared for the sport even when I had to play for physical education class. A person’s height and statue does not mean that they would have a passion for a sport that is l oved by others of this statue. Just because I was nearly 6 feet should not have been reason for anyone to feel that I like to play basketball. This argument is false dichotomy. False dilemma thinking or the fallacy of exhaustive hypothesis is a type of logical fallacy that involves a situation in which only two alternatives are considered, which in fact there is at least one additional option. The generalization was made that since I was tall I wanted and liked to play basketball. The third and final stereotype is one that I was questioned about years ago by a good friend of mine. She was a large young lady and short which made her look even larger. She would always seem down and stand offish around a group of people that we did not know. I have always been one to speak and socialize with anyone and somewhat stylish in dress. She questioned me on an outfit that I was wearing saying that I should feel self-conscious because my back was out in the dress and that she would never wear something like that because of her size. I simply informed her that this is her problem; you (she) allow others to dictate how you feel about yourself. They say you should be ashamed or embarrassed about your looks (i.e. weight) and because of this you should act and feel this way, not true. Just because you are not a size 3 and average height does not mean you are not beautiful and should have all the esteem, and pride in yourself as anyone could muster. This argument if fallacious because the inference from the premise to the conclusion is fallacy because of mistakes in the reasoning (Mosser, K. 2010). People who felt they were discriminated against-whether based on gender, age, race, religion – all experienced significant impacts even after they were removed from the situation. The lingering effects hurt people in a very real way, leaving them at a disadvantage. Even many steps removed from a prejudicial situation, people are carrying around this baggage that negatively impacts their lives. People are aggressive in their ideologies because they are adamant in their discriminatory beliefs. Negative stereotyping does have lasting affects because this construct is generally instilled in their children and if this cyclical deterministic view is not broken, such negativity will continue to manifest. Racism and Anti-Semitism is very much alive and still a major problem in this country, and around the world.
